Shattered Glass

Shattered Glass

While helping a friend clean out her garage, this pane of glass fell and we ended up with shattered glass on the floor. What I found interesting is the way it shattered. None of the pieces went flying away and it looks like it could be put back together. Now we all know that with the broken glass it is impossible to put it back the way it was. But a person could get creative and make this into something new. Doing a Google search I found that there are many suggestions for using the shattered glass – art pieces and jewelry were just a few.

In talking with friends and acquaintances about dealing with Alzheimer’s disease in a family member I have found that one of the most common threads of conversation is feeling like their lives have been shattered into many pieces just like that glass pane. And just like that shattered pane of glass, their lives will never be the same as before. But, with time, it can get easier. At first, it is a shock to know that your loved one has Alzheimer’s. And it will take some time to get used to the idea that they will continue to decline and may eventually not even know who you are. But there will still be many good times. Just as with the shattered glass, be creative and find new ways to keep life as normal as possible for  you and your loved one for as long as you can. If they have always liked to go to yard sales, then take them to a few. If they liked going to the summer concerts in the park, be sure to take them. Actually, music can be quite soothing for both of you.

I know for myself, it was a difficult journey with my mother but I eventually I learned to appreciate and cherish the good days. One thing my mother loved to do was go for a car ride in the country and then stop for ice cream. With my mother it was a learning experience and now taking care of my father with this same horrible disease it is easier the second time around.

Father’s Day

Balloon at Thurston Classic

Yesterday, for Father’s Day, I took dad to Meadville, had an early supper at 5 Guys, and then on to watch the hot air balloons launch at the Thurston Classic. Since his walking is not as steady as it used to be we parked and watched from the car rather than trying to maneuver through the mud and ruts to get to the football field. He seemed to enjoy himself. Had a little trouble getting him to bed last night as he kept telling me he wasn’t tired. Finally got to bed around 11:30. Of course then he didn’t want to get up today.

He is sleeping more and more during the day so I do my best to keep him awake as much as possible. I’m sure it must get boring for him at times just being here with me a lot of the time. Made a nice pork roast dinner today for Fathers Day – he ate two helpings so I know he liked it. My sister Jonie and her husband and granddaughter stopped in to wish him a happy Fathers Day. Had to waken him to talk with them and he went right back to sleep when they left. I’m going to waken him shortly to go to McDonalds for awhile. He enjoys going there because there is always a crowd of people there to talk to. One thing I have learned in taking care of my parents is to cherish each day.
